The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Professor Dr. Azmi Mahafdah, met today, Monday 2-3-2026, in the Higher Education Council hall with the presidents of Jordanian public universities. At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Mahafdah welcomed the attendees and congratulated them on the advent of the blessed month of Ramadan.

During the meeting, Minister Mahafdah reviewed the decisions recently taken by the Council of Ministers, which included approving that the government bear (50%) of the dues of the Social Security Corporation owed by the public universities, to be paid over the next three years. This is in addition to approving the exemption of public universities from the financial liabilities owed to the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission, provided that the public universities commit to taking practical and clear measures to address stagnant and saturated specializations through the gradual suspension of admission to specializations for which a decline in demand has been proven or whose alignment with labor market needs is weak, and restructuring them, updating their study plans and transforming them into qualitative tracks or applied specializations. The need to develop the capabilities of faculty members was also emphasized in a way that enhances employment opportunities and supplies the national economy with qualitative competencies. Minister Mahafdah also stressed the necessity for universities to comply with paying their due contributions to the Social Security Corporation monthly and regularly, and the necessity of obtaining prior approval from the Prime Minister before carrying out any administrative appointments of all kinds.

Minister Mahafdah also asked all presidents of Jordanian public universities to work, with the utmost speed, to prepare financial plans for each university for the years (2026–2029) in line with the Economic Modernization Vision, provided that they include specific procedures within a time frame and performance indicators that enable monitoring the implementation of the plan and evaluating the university’s performance.

During the meeting, Minister Mahafdah also reviewed the Royal directives aimed at unifying national efforts to protect the youth of the nation from the scourge of drugs, calling on university presidents to follow up on the implementation of what was stated in the strategies to combat the scourge of drugs prepared by each university.
