The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Azmi Mahafzah, met with the presidents of Jordan's public universities

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Azmi Mahafzah, met with the presidents of Jordan's public universities in the presence of the Ministry's Secretary-General, Dr. Mamoun Al-Debie, in the Higher Education Council Hall. The meeting focused on discussing several key issues, primarily the development of curricula across various university disciplines to equip students with essential skills, helping them access local, regional, and global job markets. Additionally, the need to include courses on media and information literacy, as well as the newly designed national education curriculum recently prepared by a specialized committee, was highlighted. The discussion also covered the need for public universities to introduce new specializations that meet labor market demands, aligning with the new Jordanian general secondary education system, particularly in vocational and technical disciplines for students in the vocational track.

Furthermore, the importance of aligning with the digitalization processes in various government services was discussed, emphasizing the need to reflect this in services offered by universities to their students through cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship. Also discussed was the admission mechanism applied this year for enrolling non-Jordanian (international) students, underscoring the importance of adhering to the Higher Education Council’s decision to restrict international student admissions to the unified electronic admission system launched this year. The number of international students who applied for programs and majors in public universities at the start of the 2024-2025 academic year and paid the application fee reached 3,807 students, while 3,605 students from 122 countries were nominated for admission.

In addition, discussions addressed the debts of public universities, the proposed mechanisms to address and reduce these debts, and strategies to prevent their future inflation. The meeting was attended by Shadi Al-Masadeh, Director of the Secretariat of the Higher Education Council, and Muhannad Al-Khatib, Media Advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research/Director of the Unified Admission Coordination Unit.
